Top tips from Richard Chapman…
For years the River Dove, which luckily is only a few miles from my front door, has been a mecca for barbel anglers across the UK, with known fish to nearly 20lbs. During this time it has become dominated by boilie and pellet approaches and the chub were of course quick to jump onto this abundant food source. Fast forward a few years and you now have a lot of big, wily old chub which often turn their nose up at the more traditional maggot and bread approach.
By still keeping mobile as you traditionally would with a mashed bread approach, but by switching up the baits the bites have definitely increase, as has the average size. The only issue is bread by it’s nature is quite an instant bait, but boilies having a tough outer skin are great for avoiding nuisance fish but not quite so attractive from the off so this is what I’ve been doing to really turbo charge them.
1. Starting off with the 12mm Smokey Jack, a quick waft of the smokey/meaty scent, you know chub will love it!
2. Give it a quick squash to break open the skin, it also flattens the bait to sit better on the river bed. If you are doing large quantities just use a flat board to squash them all in one go.
3. Add a good glug of the matching Particle and Pellet syrup to coat all the baits.
4. Give it a few minutes to soak in, having broken the skin really accelerates this process.
5. Finally give them a dusting of the Active Stick mix, you end up with a bait which gives off a cloud of ground bait the moment it hits the water, then keeps pumping out the liquid which it has soaked up. Although it takes a bit more time to prepare the results will be worth it!

I’m a non-boilie using angler, but nevertheless it surprises me that a cheese flavoured boilie has not found favour with the chub anglers that use boilies.
