Trip 15

soon

Trip 14

As it’s half term at the end of the week,  no day fishing for me.  I have taken the decision to concentrate on Pike this week (and the next two trips out), as it could be too late by the time I get back on here.  I only have a couple of weeks left for Carp fishing as the syndicate follows the old close season on this particular lake.

image

I have opted for my first trip, to fish the known area of spawning and if no joy there, move onto the main lake again for my last two trips.

image

Predator Plus

What Pike could resist this bright red flavoured Herring.

My plan is to cover this area within my 5 hrs of fishing, so I can ascertain if the Pike are in this area at the moment.

image

image

image

image

With gaps, bays, snags, there are plenty of options for the Pike to be hold up in.

image

Moved swim and within minutes had a Jack.

image

Just need it’s Mother!

Just one Pike was it for the day.

Until next time

Trip 13

I am out after that monster Pike again, despite thinking I should be Carp fishing, with it only being the 2nd Feb today.  The Pike should be showing signs of pairing up for spawning, however, after checking that area of the lake, it was void of any sign of Pike activity.

image

So I have gone for one of my favourite Carp swims with plenty of margin snags for the bait fish to hide away in and for Mr & Mrs Pike to attack from.

image

Need the pod again today, as the swim is completely under water.

Dead baits as normal and a squirt of predator Plus and we will wait and see.

At around 1230 the left rod was off and attached to a small Jack Pike, despite the size of it, I was very happy.  This was the first fish for sometime and just maybe, I had found a good spot, we shall have to see.

image

About 45 minutes later the same rod was off again, with another Jack Pike.  I was getting something right (at last).

I was very happy to have found some Pike, despite the size.

Until next time
Richard

Trip 12

image

Am out again, after a Pike or two, which is proving very tricky the year.  I can only put this down to the mild winter we have had. I am trying an area which has produced some Pike in the past.  I am on a small point that has an island at the entrance – which I have put a dead bait on and the other rod is on the margin tree to the left of me. I may move to another spot later on.

image

Stunning clear blue sky today.

Despite moving the baits around, still no Pike.

Until next time
Richard

Trip 11

With the river still to high for my liking, you really need to think of your own safety in these conditions.

image

I really need the level to drop down to 0.6, this is where the level was before Christmas.

image

I have come over to the lake again, into another area with a nice bar, this is where the bream hang out.  I am also hoping there would be a Pike in this area.  You would think this would be perfect.

image

Nice overhanging tree.

image

The bar runs out from the point on the island, a perfect ambush point.

image

Unfortunately another blank day on the lake.

image

image

With a friendly Robin or two I sat back and enjoyed the day.

Unfortunately no joy again.

Trip 10

I am back out on the lake (again), as the river is still too high for me to get anywhere good for Pike fishing.

image

However, I am quite enjoying fishing the lake and I may stick it out here until the middle of February.

image

Two Robins sat on my rod’s, I just love his time of year, as the wildlife is so friendly or brave (hungry).

Both rod’s are being fished at range near a bar.  I am hoping the fish are held up for the Winter as the cold weather has finally arrived.

image

image

Godman Angling Solu-Ties are a perfect way to stop the lead from flying up the line.  I like to have as little resistance as possible and on the big casts the lead will always fly up the line.  I don’t like using heavy leads and these things solve this problem perfectly.

image

Just fed my Robin for the day.

With no signs of Pike after two hours, I moved out onto the end of the point.

image

We will see what happens here, to my left there is a lovely deep margin and a small plateau out in front of me.  Both perfect spots for bait fish to be.

Unfortunately, no Pike again today.

Will try another area of the lake on my next trip out, just need to track the bait fish down.

Until next time
Richard

Trip 8 & 9

I have combined these two trip as I have gone away for the weekend to fish a large reservoir for Pike with one of my friends.

image

image

We were out on a boat for two days with a couple of rod’s each and had 21 pike up to 19-4. Also had a great deal of fun, drifting baits and float fish after the Pike.

image

image

Perfect conditions, no photos of the fish, just a video.

Until next time

Regards Richard

Trip 7

I am out on the lakes again.  As predicted the river is still completely unfishable and will be for some time.

image

I am going to give the snaggy bay area a go today, with a spot of roving around after these Pike.

image

This area is just full of options and must contain some nice Pike.

After an hour, I was off to a new area.

image

And positioned the baits again near to the snags.

image

This is going to be my final swim of the day and let’s hope the Pike are here.

Unfortunately another blank today, oh well.

Till next time
Richard

Trip 6

image

With yet more rain last night, the river has risen again and is still well and truly unfishable.  So I have decided to go on the lake.  I am in one of the small bay areas.  This gives me plenty of options to catch some Pike today.

image

A friendly Robin was around to help.

Both rod’s have dead baits on , one ledgered and one on the float as normal.

However, today was not to be.  No joy.

Regards Richard

Trip 5

With all the rain we had yesterday and last night, the river is well in flood.  So I have gone on the lake this afternoon and evening.

image

I am going to try a few spots around the lake today.  I have one rod set up for ledgering and the other rod on a float and we will see what we pick up.  Other than me, I have never seen anyone Pike fishing on here.  I have had a 17lb + Pike some years ago and there is a good head of silver fish,  so there is Pike in here with a good chance of a large one.

My first Pike was a 10 lb one on the ledger rod with a sardine on.

My second Pike was about half this size, this did go to prove that the Pike are breeding and there is a good chance of a big fat Pike out there somewhere.

This time, I recast further down the margin shelf, in the hope that the big fish may just be sitting there.

image

With the light going, it was time to start packing away.  I tend to stay 30/45 minutes after dark (just in case).

Dispite the sizes of the Pike, I was very happy as this had proved there were breeding fish with the probability of a large fish

Until next time
Richard

Trip 4

I have left the river alone for a few days, in the hope the levels will drop down some what. However, the rain is still around but saying this, it has slowed down which in turn has dropped the river down a bit.

image

Finding slack water is still a hard task at the moment.  The area I am in today is alright and also looks like a very good place for Pike.

image

One bait is more or less under my feet, up against the reed’s and the other rod is at the mouth on the stream flowing in.

image

There is a bit of turbulence in the water, but no real issue.

Despite this looking a perfect area, no Pike were had today.

Until next time
Richard

Trip 3

Today I am out again on the river after the pike.  The river is still in flood which limits the areas that I can fish, as the flood plans are full of water.

image

I arrived around 0930 and I was heading to the swim that I had previously fished.  Despite not catching last time, I still think this is a perfect Pike swim.

image

With the sun out, it was looking even better.  Both rod’s are being fished with deadbaits Mackerel and Herring being my choice today.

Unfortunately no joy again.  I think I may try the lakes until the water level drops and clears up.

Until next time
Richard

Trip 2

image

With the Avon in full flood, I have managed to find this perfect pool.  Mind you, it could get be a bit tricky if I get a big fish!

I have one rod on a float and the other ledgered, both with dead baits.

image

The conditions looked good in the slack pool.

Despite my best efforts, there where no Pike on the bank today.

Until next time

Richard

Trip 1

For the first trip of the year, I am Pike fishing on the river after that 25 lb.

image

There has been a lot of rain over the past two days and there will also be plenty of it today.  I am going for a more static approach this time, as the weather is going to be rainy.  Hopefully, this will result in a fish or two and if the wind and rain does calm down, I will move on later.

image

I have an assortments of baits and my bottle of predator Plus from Bait-Tech .

The weather has brightened up and has stopped raining for a bit, so I have gone for a walk about, to see if I can pick up a Pike in the slack water along the river.

image

image

image

image

image

After some 3 hour’s of walking and driving around, the only real prospect of a Pike would be back in the swim I started from!  As the river was so on flood, it was hard to find a perfect spot.

By 1400 hrs, I was back there and hoping for the dusk take.

image

Just a perfect area. Dispite staying until after 5pm .

image

My first trip of 2016 ended in a blank.

Till next time

Pike Fishing Trips (2015)

Trip 3

Today is the start of my Winter campaign to catch a 25lb Hampshire Avon pike.  I have two months to do this, which should be plenty of time.

image

I do vary my approach from small single rod spots to large open bends on the river.  I will also move around a bit but if along the way, I see a likely spot, I will always drop a bait in there for 15 minutes or so.

image

So far today, I have been in 3 areas and have had one fish.

image

A nice 21 lb 10 oz pike taken on a Joey Mackerel.  I tend to use Mackerel, Herring or Sardines when Pike fishing.

Around 1230, I moved again and had a pike of around 10 lb.

image

Within 10 minutes of arriving in this swim – which was where the 20 lb (ers) had come from this morning.

I was having a bit of a dilemma now, as I did not expect to catch so fast.  At this point in time, I had not had a bite to eat or even a drink due to my wondering around, looking for likely pike swims for my quick day session and for my barbel trips next year.
Unfortunately for me, my next choice of swim was on the opposite bank and I had spotted an angler walking along the other side heading for that swim.  I will have to wait for another day.

image

With the sun slowly going down, I stayed in this swim as the only other option was a car journey move.  This could have resulted in no free swims as it is the Bank Holiday after the Christmas weekend and there were a few angler’s on the bank today.

That was all for my trip out.

Till next time
Richard

Trip 2

I am out for a few hour’s today, on the hunt for that big pike, who is hiding in this lake.  I am going to be as mobile as much as I can with the weather as it is today (wintery showers).

image

All set up in my first swim.  I will be dead baiting today with mackerel and herring,  I do have some trout with me, I generaly save these for the river.  However, its always worth a go.
The water is the colour of mud as we have had so much rain over the past week.

image

Kettle is on

I have had a dropped take already.  These fish are so switched on.  I was free lining and the line got hooked up a bit, enough for the rod tip to knock and that was that, the pike was off Scott free.

Anyway, can’t say a lot, but there are some real idiots out there. I thought it best to go home.

Richard

Trip 1

Not bad going, I am out for my first trip of 2015 and it’s only the 2nd of January!
I am doing a couple of days and a night with a friend for a social New Year’s drink.
The fishing may suffer a bit, we will set up next to each other as the weather has forcast plenty of rain.
image

image

image
I had even brought some dead baits, as I was still determined to catch that big pike.  But I was going to be carp fishing at night, as I didn’t fancy catching an eel.
Bespite the conditions looking good for both pike & carp, all we managed to achieve was to lost a pike each.

However we did have fun and plenty of Rum was drunk.

Till next time

Trip No1 Pike Fishing (2014)

Trip 3

This is it, the last trip of 2014 and it was going to be an overnighter.  However, the frost arrived and I fancied my chances at catching some pike, so it turned into a day session.  I am trying very hard not to go carp fishing for the sake of it as I believe I got stuck in a bit of a rut once or twice before.

image

My first choice of swim today is where I had the pike from on my last pike trip and as my last carp trip I spotted a lot of fry down this end of the lake.  Therefore, this was the best end to start at.
Within the hour my first fish was in the net. A nice 15lb-6oz fish.

IMG_2167

Not long after that, I was moving to my next swim towards the dam end.

image

I had only just sat down and the rod was away again!  With another hard fighting pike, it turned out to be the same 14lb that I had the other week.

IMG_2163

I had my other rod by the monk and I was thinking this was my best option.

image

I will give it another 30minutes and then I will move up by the reeds I think.

image

I have moved to the swim next door, so I can keep one rod on the monk, as the right hand margin has produced a fish already.  But by moving I can fish another spot.  I will give it another hour or so. Heavy rain storms keep coming through, right pain, when I want to stay mobile.

image

This time, I have moved completely round to the other side of the lake and towards the shallow end near the reed’s.

image

My new friend, after sharing lunch!

image

I also had a friendly Robin too.

My third fish of the day was a stunning 20lb 6oz pike.

Trip 2

I haven’t tried pike fishing on this lake for a long time.  I normally bring a bit of carp kit as I inevitably spot some carp.  This time I thought I should just takepike tackle as I have taken notice of the reports, saying that there are large pike hiding in here.

image

Nice misty start to today.  I am feeling on one rod and legering on the other, with a big plastic run ring to keep the resistance down.  These fish will drop the bait if they feel a thing.
I forgot to bring smaller bank sticks, oh well, at least it saves my back as I don’t need to bend over to pick the rod’s up today.
Looks like I am back in the 80’s fishing!

image

It must be Winter as the Robins are out demanding food.
My aim is to move swim every 2-3 hours today and hopefully locate some fish.

image

Moved swim now, as I spotted a pike strike from the far side.  I now have one rod under a lovely overhanging tree and the other along the margin, also by some snags.

Completely out of the blue my right had rod was off, not a slow take at all.  I quickly ran to the rods and hit into a hard fighting fish.  When this finally was in the net, it tipped the scales at 14-10. Do me.

wpid-2014-11-30-16.34.03.png.png

I was not sure if I should move, as the pike I had spotted was where I had put the other rod.
After 30 minutes I knew it was time to move on again.

image

One rod was put along the front of the reeds and the other was dropped over the front of the swim, as this normally a good hide away spot for them.  Each time I set up, I always put a couple of handfuls of pellets over the top, to help the small fry into the area I want.

I had an aborted take, which was frustrating and after another hour, I moved to my last swim of the day, in the hope of catching another pike.  There are plenty if features in this swim, so we will see, what happens.

It’s 1600 and dispite my best tempt to tempt the pike (which was in the dying lily pads) to eat my half mackerel and herring

image

Well it’s now 1630, the sun has gone down and oh boy the temperature has dropped a lot.  I had no more fish, just a dropped take.  It was time for to be off.

Till next time

Richard

Trip 1

It’s November and I thought to myself, its about time I got the Pike rod’s out again.  Today, I have a guest with me and so being a fishing gentleman, I have given him the choice of swim and section of the river.  Plus, it would be a good opportunity for me to start looking for some nice Pike fishing areas, the water levels have gone up after all this rain.  I did wonder if I should have taken the barbel kit instead.

wpid-20141109_072625.jpg

wpid-20141109_072633.jpg

Both rod’s were placed in a nice slow part of the river, where the Pike would lay up for a rest and so would the bait fish.
My bait choices today are between Mackerel, Herring and small Trout.  I have also brought along my plug box along as well.

wpid-20141109_082310.jpg

The sun is finally making some progress with the fog slowly.

wpid-20141109_081826.jpg

It would be nice to warm up a bit before the rain arrives back later.

Well, I have been up and down the river, with no luck and this is still looking like my best option and the rain on it’s way.  I have pitched up where I started this morning, for the last 3 hours or so.

wpid-20141109_132200.jpg

Unfortunately, no joy today.  I will be back again after the Pike soon.

Till next time
Richard

Rivers way to flooded to go, may have to put on hold until the end of this year.  :(:(

Trip No5 Pike Fishing (2013)

I finally managed to get out before Christmas.  It had been a bad 3 weeks, both my wife and myself had got that stomach bug, as well as, all the wind and rain.  I found a free day when the weather was not too bad.
image

The river is very high due to all of the rain (as I mentioned before) and coloured, I hope it will produce some nice pike for me.

image

I set up on a big bend which has plenty of slack water for the fish to rest up in.
Both rods were baited up with half herring,  for some reason was the only type of dead baits I had in the freezer.  I was sure I had some joey mackerel on there,  oh well let’s hope the Pike are in the mood for herring this week!

Both rods have been cast in the slack water, clear deepish water, just the other side of a dead reeds.
image

image

I have been trying to catch some live bait with not much success.

Unfortunately, my trip ended in a blank all round, I even had a go for chub, with no success.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMSAEwYrqok

That’s all for this time.

Richard

Trip No4 Pike Fishing (2013)

I am back out on the Hampshire Avon today, doing a bit of pike fishing, as I have a day off work.  It’s been a long time since I have been on the river, due to being obsessed with trying to catch the big common, with not much success!

wpid-wp-1386325802051.jpgThe first thing I noticed, was that the river level was very low for this time of the year.

wpid-wp-1386328182224.jpgRod 1

Was cast by some reeds, with a mackerel dead bait and some Fox bait flags.

dead bait

Rod 2

was cast on a nice clear sandy area, just off a overhanging tree, with a herring dead bait

wpid-20131206_154338.jpgi was trying to catch some live bait with not much success , and though i would have a go at catching some chub by rolling some bait. also with not much success.

wpid-wp-1386336499865.jpgBy noon time, it was time for a brew and some lunch. Not 1 minute after I finished my brew and rod 2 by the tree had a couple of knocks!  I quickly took the drop off bobbin off, held the line and it started to tighten up and I pulled into a nice river pike.  After a good fight I had a nice 12lb 8oz river pike in the nets.

IMG_2121This was the only take of the day, nice looking fish.

wpid-20131206_154426.jpgwith the sun going down it was time to head home.

Trip No3 Pike Fishing (2013)

I am out again for my third trip of the year, with all the snow and the cold weather I thought it best to go pike fishing again.  I have got some bread, my float rod and center pin in the car just in case the going gets hard.  I have managed to go to another area after a quick drive round this morning.

image

Shame its not in the sun as the wind is very cold today.  Well with no joy by 1 pm, it was time to move.  I found a nice 1 rod swim and with a few branches moved out the way, it was bait out and sit back time.

image

I will give it a hour or so here and see what happens.  Well, it’s 3.30pm and still no joy, have been up and down a 1/2 mile stretch of the river full of snags and areas of slack water with only one knock and I am not sure that was one anyway.

image

Let’s see what the last few hours bring?  The last few hours was a no go with the pike, I will be back again and let’s hope for better luck as I seem to be having a hard time with the pike at the moment.

Trip No2 Pike Fishing (2013)

I have managed to get off work early today and with the pike kit still in the car, I popped into my local tackle shop to go and grab some dead baits.  And it was back down the river,  with the levels still high, I was limited to the wooded area as before.  I was all set up by 1400hrs which was not bad going.

image

Well, with no joy by 5pm, the temperature was down to -3, it was time to go home and have a re-think and hope the water levels go down some more, as it 50m into the fields and I am unable to fish anywhere else.  My have to try winter chub fishing.

My First Trip of (2013)

As the whole family has had the flu since before New Year’s, this is my first trip out in 2013.
As the floods are still going strong and the lake temperatures are still low. I decided to go back onto the Hampshire Avon and have a go for some more pike.  I still needed my waders to get to the swim.  I only set up one rod with a nice half mackerel on the end and flicked it out in a nice bit of slack water.

image

I will get it about an hour here and if no joy, will move on.
Below is a picture of my very simple Pike rig, made up of five components – float stop, float, ball lead, rubber bead and a snap link to attach the wire trace to.

image

Time to move swim soon.
After a quick walk down stream, I set up again in a large area of slack water below a big raft of weed created by a tree that had fallen in, over the winter.

image

I have put a nice fresh bait on as well, hopefully that will do the trick.  Well after no joy, it was time to head back to my banker swim by the old boathouse and with the light fading fast, I hope my luck is in today, Unfortunately no Joy today.

My Second Pike Trip (2012)

I am back out pike fishing again, as the lakes were still frozen this week.  I have come back to the same area as I had done so well the last time.  However, I have more time this weekend so hopefully, will cover a greater area with better success on the size front.  My first stop was the boathouse swim, as I had two fish from there before.

image

After an hour no joy.  It was time to move down river, with still no joy after another hour ,I was off down river again and found a very large area of slack water that looked very promising.

image

Well after moving up and down the river with no joy, it was time to go back to where I started.  Only to loose a nice fish at the net.  Oh well, with the light fading they was no point in moving, just crossing my fingers that as the fish did not get the bait, it may come back if i am very lucky. Unfortunately not, and it’s time for home.

My First Pike Trip in (2012)

As the weather has been so poor and with my failed carp trip in the week, due to a frozen lake and only 4 hours free.  I though it was time to get the Pike rod’s out.  So off down the river for a bit of roving with a dead bait.  The river was still in flood, it was a bit hard to find a swim. However, I found a nice bit of slack water by a bridge, that will do for a start.

image

I stayed here for about an hour ,before I moved up river to an old boathouse.  This was under water due to the flooding, but it is a great area for Pike. I had to put my waders on, as the path was under water.

image

Once though the water, I set up and cast out.  Within a few minutes, the Pike float had given a big knock and not long after that, a nice 10lb Pike was in the net.  Time to move again, I will stop there on the way back and hope it’s big brother is there.

image

I found some more slack water up stream and after about 30 minutes, the float was under water again and after a bit of a battle another 10lb + pike was in the net.

image

Off to find another spot

I had been using mackerel up to this point, but I only had one more, so time to change over to smelt.

Well, after about an hour with no joy on the smelt and the sun going down I was time to use my last mackerel back at the boathouse swim.  After an hour, when the sun was just going down, the float did a quick knock and then straight and I hit into a nice 12lb pike.,

That was not bad for a 4 hours session, 3 pike over the 10 Ibs mark.

Unfortunately, I forgot my camera and was only able to use my phone which is no good for self take pictures.
