Trip 47 Carp Fishing 2017

After getting  a text from a friend saying do you fancy doing a social at the weekend and the wife say yep it’s OK for Friday night – we have a 50th birthday party to go to on Saturday night.

I let my friend pick the favourable area of the lake as he arrived way before me and it was just perfect.  The wind was blowing nicely on to this bank.  It was the perfect area and after a good lead around, I soon found a couple of perfect spots and flicked a bag on them both, with a few catalyst boilies over the top.  Within the hour I was off and into a nice common.

That will do me as a starter.  I re-baited that rod and settled down to a few glasses of wine and a natter, before I knew it, it was time to get in the bag.  Even before I had put a foot in the bag, I was in to another fish.  This tipped the scales at just over 17 lb.  As the night progressed a very large thunderstorm went around the lake but luckily not really over it, as I continued to catch through the night.

Through the night I had 5 fish

What an amazing light show!

Resulting in this lovely 27 lb+ Common and not long after that another Common showing 19 lb 14 oz on the scales.

Now, that was a stonking nights fishing and not long after that, I was away again with my 8th fish of the trip and all in less than 12 hrs.  This was another common at 19 lb 6 oz and as the morning progressed I banked another one at 20 lbs!

I ended up banking a total of 10 fish and losing 2, what a perfect way to start my week’s break away camping with the kids.

All these fish were taken over a small baited area, using catalyst boilies.  Fishing bags filled with Pellet over the top, in conjunction with a Natural or a FW Pops ups Masla pop up.

Until next time

Richard

Trip 46 Carp Fishing 2017

I am out for my normal Tuesday night session but I didn’t do a day session as I needed to get some work done.  It’s the school holiday’s next week and I am taking the kids camping in Wales for a few day – so no fishing for me.  It’s always good to have a break and have family time.

After a bit of a look around and not really fancying the area I was in the last few time, mainly because the fish were coming in day light hour’s for me and this wouldn’t help tonight.  So I headed off to have a look at the other lakes and sure enough, I found a likely area which took my fancy.  It had also been a long time since I had fished this swim, which was well overdue a cast about.  After I found a couple of spots, I put a bag in one with a few boilies in the area and the other rod was going to be fished as a single, a bit further out beyond the the spot.

I like to fill my bags with a mix of  Pellet, a few boilies and a good load of liquid – for added attraction especially when fishing silt.

As darkness fell, I was starting to get liners and my hopes where building, this carried on through most of the night. This became very frustrating as I could also hear the fish crashing out, I was in in the wrong spot or could the fish just be preoccupied with naturals?  Well, finally at around 4 am, one of my rods was away and into another hard fighting airfield lake common – yes there are mirrors in here.  They are extraordinary hard to catch, the fight you get from these fish is truly amazing and just give you that fishing buzz.

19lb 4oz

I was very happy after all the activity, with no action for so long.

Until next time

Richard

Trip 45 Carp Fishing – 2017

With a couple of family things going on this week & weekend, I am limited to Saturday night only.  This is not a bad thing and always nice to get an extra couple of hour’s fishing in the morning.

There where still a few people about when I arrived – some were doing the whole weekend, others were just starting to pack away.  As luck would have it, no one had fished the swim that I fished the other night and with a very strong wind pushing on to the bank, I felt that it had to be my best option.  There was on angler on the island which meant I was unable to put my right hand rod on my normal spot, so I took the opportunity to fish to my left and find two new spots.  This swim covers an amazing amount of water and a high percentage is over looked by anglers, especially the clearer on area’s.

I found a couple of very nice spots and put a few pouches filled with Catalyst boilies around the marker float. I tied up some new Ronnie Rig‘s and put on Natural Pop Ups and flicked them both out.

With the rain finally passing and the sun came out, it was quite pleasant.  The wind was still pushing very hard on to this bank, it was not long before I had my first take which unfortunately found one of the many under water obstacles.  Oh well, out with another bag and cold pizza for lunch.

2 of the 3 fish that I have had this afternoon – not the biggest I have ever had but in shallow water, these things but up an amazing fight.

As the evening progressed the sun was setting, the rods where off again and oh this one feels better.  You can never tell but once in the margins, I could tell by the way it was holding the bottom, after another hard fight, it rolled over the cord.

A nice golden 22lb 1oz common and a sunset to match.

What a pleasure to be outside.  Oddly and handy the night was fish free, until this colourful surprise at 6 am.

I didn’t weight it but it probably was around 14 lb, very short and chunky fish, did not know that was in here!

With the sun coming up over the forest, it would soon be time to head home for a family day of fun.

Now that was an action filled 12 hours, can’t wait for my next trip out.

Until next time

Richard

Trip 44 Carp Fishing 2017

After looking after my poorly daughter for the past two days, it was nice to be out in the fresh air.  It did turn into a very rainy evening, not quite what I was expecting.

I had found a lot of fish in this part of the lake and felt this had to be my best option.  I set about finding a couple of areas in the silt and about 4 ft deep, just what I was looking for.  After pluming around for a bit, the job was done.  A few pouch fulls of catalyst boilies over the top and a natural pop up and with a bag filled with pallets, I was all set.

I had a interesting night in between heavy rain showers, I managed to land one fish and lost another.  The main issue, being a snag in between myself and the area I was fishing.  This is one of the features of this lake, it was originally filled in with bits of rubble after the airfield was dug up and then re-dug into lakes.

Misty and a wet pack up this morning, first for a long time and we  certainty need the rain.

Until next time

Trip 43 – Carp Fishing – 2017

This trip was going to be a social at the airfield lake with Rob.  However, after getting a message on Wednesday from another syndicate member, saying the fish are spawning and neither myself or Rob wanted to fish for spawning Carp (this isn’t very good the fish’s welfare).  So plan B was put in place and I find myself fishing the idyllic Holbrook Millpond again – this is never a bad thing.

As I arrived at dusk, after a merry trip round the M25, by the time my kit was sorted out, it was pitch black.  Rob offered to put my baits out with the boat, this made sense, as you really need to be fishing as close as possible to the far bank.  There was no way I could do that in the dark. All rod’s were fished with nature pop ups, a load of chopped boilies and pellets over the top.

Night 1

Sometime around 04.30, the right hand rod was off and not very long after that, my first mill pond fish was  out, not the biggest but a start.  That rod was put out again and Rob came down the bank and to ask if I could take a photo for him of a 20+ Common, with this done, we had a brew, a quick chat and we were back off to our swims.

Around noon, we both reeled in, had a good look round the lake and had a brew in the club house.  I decided on the positions of my rod’s for the coming two night’s.

I would be fishing a small set of pads, the far margins and a set to the right of me.  These areas where baited with a mix of chopped & whole boilies, catalyst & Betafin Pellet  soaked in minaminos / Betafin.

The weather had warmed up a bit but there was plenty of cloud about, we were very confident.

As the second day came to a close, it was looking like the fish had changed their feeding pattern to the nights.  We had not had a touch between us all day until at 22.30 and Rob banked the resident grass carp.

The night passed with both of us loosing fish and much more favourable weather conditions for a fish in the daylight hours.

Unfortunately and for no reason, that we can come up with, both myself and Rob where unable to bag any more fish, they just switched off .

Until next time

Richard
