On the Hampshire Avon after the pike today.

After a friend of mine caught a PB perch and was feeling that buzz. This reminded me of when I had my PB Chub, the buzz of that moment was amazing. I was just desperate to tell people. This made me think, you don’t get many specimen anglers anymore. I had mentioned this to a couple of mates of mine late last year. Obviously, a few other people have also been thinking this, as low and behold on a number of social media platforms there are a few people out there doing this. Therefore, in the coming years, we may well see a drift back to carp angling roots and the hunt for our own specimen fish.
I think this will be good for the industry as a whole and bring more anglers to the bank. Now, I am sure some of you will not like this but you have to look at it as a trade off. The greater the number of angler – the bigger the industry will grow. It will not reduce itself or stagnate. This must be also good for the anglers themselves, as I was once completely put off lake fishing by arrogant carp anglers. I also think it will be good for fisheries, as they will become more diverse, which again is good on a nature point of view. There will be more of a power behind the industry and maybe a chance to take action on matters which need to be resolved before ‘our dear fluffy friend’, the otter destroys it all.
I may have gone a bit off course here a bit. It’s good to see that all species of fish are fished for and that people are not stuck in the past anymore. I must say from a personal point of view I do find it hard to pull myself away from carp. This year, I am going to change that (I hope), well at least try.

Out on the lake for 12hrs, let’s see if we can catch a lump.

After spotting a post on good old Facebook regarding a very local lake stocking some upper twenty’s, with the possibility of being able to get a day ticket for only £5 for 6 hours. This will perfectly suit me (and the school run), certainly worth looking at and having a few trips in the winter months.

So, here we are for my first trip, this is after a long walk round yesterday. I thought it was worth coming back today. Armed with all sorts of bait, just the barrow and the vital bits of kit, I’m planning on doing a few hours in a couple of swims and take it from there. I have started off with a 12mm Catalyst pop up on one rod and a couple of Hi-viz Fluoro Wafters.

We shall move on from there. After the rain stopped, I quickly moved down to a corner of the lake, where there were still signs of the pads.

I had a couple of Robin’s after my pellets.

And with the a very cold wind picking up, it was time to head home and warm up.
Until next time

As you all know, I have become part of the Evolution Carp Tackle brand. The reason for this is, after looking at the products (and having a play around with them), I got a call from Kevin (from Evolution Carp Tackle) and after a long conversation, I just couldn’t turn down an opportunity like this.
In general, my fishing at the moment is a quick overnight or a few hours in the day time (when the kids are at school). I am lucky in the fact that I can go out 4 times a week. This does sound like a lot of fishing (just ask the Mrs!) but as I keep tell her, if you break it down, the day trips are only 4/5 hrs and the nights are just about 12 hrs. This does add up to a fair few hours each week but you need to treat each trip as one in itself and they are not long. I need to get quick results and felt their artificial bait range with the combination of Spotted Fin Bait, will increase my catch rate this year.
A few bits & bobs which turned up.
I am particularly fond of the Ronnie Rig, so how could I resisted these beauty’s? Now that looks just perfect a pre tied cocktail bait ronnie rigs on a Long Shank Turning Point Hooks.

The Maggot Clusters also take my fancy, as there are plenty of combination available.; from the natural range to the standard range and then it’s your choice on rig combinations.

Perfect combination with a wafter or bottom pop up and the cluster tipping of the boilie or as I have done here, chopped the bait in half.

The corn stacks will be another great aid for me this year. With so many colour combinations to use in the range. Over a small stick mix bag, it will look perfect.
I have yet to have a play about with the other bits yet but I will keep you informed as I go along. I can certainly say that if you are after a bit of an edge this winter give them a go.
