October 2026 – A Month of Autumn Carp Fishing

October has certainly been an enjoyable month on the bank, with some memorable captures, changing weather conditions, and a few decisions that made all the difference. As autumn began to take hold, my attention shifted towards Meadow Lake, although I couldn’t resist one final visit to the Airfield Lake before it closed for the winter.

Meadow Lake – What a Start to October!

After a week away from the bank, I returned to Meadow Lake with the forecast looking promising, particularly with a change in wind and rain approaching. With only a handful of anglers on the lake, I decided to make the most of the opportunity and concentrate on the southern end.

The decision paid off handsomely, producing four bites and four carp, including two thirties, a twenty and a smaller double. The highlight was a cracking 31lb 7oz common, making it a thoroughly rewarding session.

My next visit continued the good form, with three lovely mirrors coming my way, weighing 24lb 6oz, 18lb 12oz, and 28lb 12oz, respectively. A total of 71lb 10oz of carp, with that 28lb 12oz mirror being the standout capture.

Airfield Lake – One Last Throw of the Dice

The final three nights of October had to be spent on the Airfield Lake, a venue that has given me so much over the years. With winter closure approaching, I was determined to give it one last go, despite some rather challenging conditions.

High pressure, easterly winds, clear skies, and much of the lake’s bars disappearing beneath rising water levels made for a difficult challenge. I reduced my baiting approach considerably and tried everything I could to tempt one of its residents.

Unfortunately, the lake wasn’t going to give up another secret this time around, and I finished with a blank. Nevertheless, it was a thoroughly enjoyable three nights on this special, untouched water, and one that I will already be looking forward to returning to next spring.

October in Perspective

October has been a month that reminded me exactly why I love carp fishing. From rewarding sessions on Meadow Lake to the peaceful, spectacular surroundings of the Airfield Lake, it’s been another month full of anticipation, effort, and some wonderful moments.

The captures certainly made the month worthwhile, but it’s never just about the fish. Those autumn sunsets, misty mornings, and time spent beside the water are equally important.

As we head further into winter, my attention turns firmly towards Meadow Lake and my lovely club water. Hopefully, there will be plenty more opportunities to get out, despite the cold and my ongoing circulation problems.

Here’s to another month of making memories, enjoying the scenery, and, hopefully, putting a few more carp on the bank.

Tight lines, everyone.

Until next time

Richard

About richardhandel

I would like to give a brief snap shot of my life and introduce myself; My name is Richard Handel and was born in 1965 in Suffolk. I have worked as a UK Operation & Intermodule Manager for a shipping company. I live in Hampshire now and am married with 2 young children, both girls so I am a bit outnumbered even the cat is a girl! I have been fishing since I was about 7 years old. I started on small local rivers in Suffolk, then moved onto gravel pits and then carp fishing. My personal best is a 39.08 mirror, over recent years I have started river fishing again, on the Hampshire Avon, this is a nice break from the carp lakes. My life has turned a big corner this year, the company I was working for relocated their Operation centre to Estonia. I was offered a job at the head office in London. This would have meant a 5 day commute and working in Stratford. As a family, we did not fancy this, as I would hardly spend any time with the children (and the Mrs). So after 22.5 years, I was given a nice redundancy package and with my wife is working full time. I became the house husband. This has meant a complete turn around in my fishing, as I can pick and choose when I go. I have found a splendid new syndicate to fish this year, which includes 5 lakes and some 8 miles of river with only 150 members. It's an amazing change to the way I am able to fish. I am now trying to start my own tackle business and make a bit of a name for myself in the world of fishing, as I have retired from real work. Richard
