Trip 45 Carp Fishing – 2019

With the weather conditions still spot on, I had to squeeze another night in.  The pressure was low and there was a good bit of wind & rain along with a nice southerly breeze.  The downside was it was the weekend and the pressure was back on the lake.

My swim choice was pretty limited by the time I arrived and soon settled on the swim which had given me 3 runs the other week, struck into thin air.  Nice.

20190719_175918

I was quite lucky and there was a break in the weather ish, just light rain.  I set the bivvy up first, then set about the rods and other bits.  After leading about over the same spot as last time and with the strong wind blowing this side of the lake, it would be pretty settled and hopefully, the carp would head over this way.  In general, I’m not too far away from where I was fishing the last time and may benefit from the other angler pressure.

20190719_183514.jpg

I’ve spombed out a good load of bait over a small area and flicked a Ronnie rig set up (with a small bag on each filled with Betafin and Catalyst pellets), a Catalyst wafter with a Catalyst pop snowman style.  Both rods are in the same area, just 1 wrapped differently.  I find this method very productive.

20190719_175949

The first take happened around 4am and in a lull in the rain, which is always a bonus.  A pretty undramatic fight insured for a fair time under the rod tip, there was no way this fish was coming up to the top any time soon.  I just had to perch on the edge of the gravel swim with my toes in the water taking my time and play the carp out.  At first, when I first picked the rod up, I didn’t think it was that big but as time drew on, it was clear I had an upper 20 or another low 30.

27lb 12oz Common

Perfect, I was well happy.  As dawn was fast approaching and to stand any chance of getting any more sleep, the rod was soon back in the water and my head on the pillow.

20190720_072449

The rain faded away, the cloud disappeared and the sun shone again.  This may probably the last bit of rain for a few weeks, but very well needed.  It’s not far off packing up time and I’m happy with the result.  It’s also the first carp I’ve had in the dark, in this swim.  All the previous ones have been in daylight hours.  Time to get things sorted out and head for home.

Type error on the weight

Until next time

How The Deeper Helped Me

I’ve been using the Deeper pro+ for just over a year now.  Since then, it’s helped me understand the topography of the lakes and has certainly helped catch more fish!  I have heard a lot of negative comments about people using the Deeper, they believe it’s cheating.

Watching the for features on my phone

Watching the for features on my phone

casting-out.jpg

Casting out

Well, here are my thoughts on the matter.

I’ve used a marker float since I can’t remember when and have always spent hours flicking it around the lake and recording depths.  Also with permission from the clubs, I use to spend many days in the closed season mapping out lakes.  I still not got as much information as you can get from using the pro+3.

The downsides of using a marker float can include the following; unless you pop the maker float up every 1 or 2 feet, you can easily miss a feature like a 6-inch hump/indentation in the lake bed, you need to record the number of wraps at each point of interest, how can you accurately map out the lake bed?  It’s all down to you as to where you make this spot on your map.  I have found over the years that it was never that accurate.  In the case of understanding the complete topography of the whole lake, you would need to transfer your findings to a master copy.  This was a pain until Google Maps came along.

Then along came the Deeper which records all this information.  It’s so much more accurate.  The lake book feature on the website brings all your hard work to life, in the same way as it has been done in the past but much simpler and with much more options.

This is why I think it’s a step forward and not a cheating tool.  Unlike a marker float, the Deeper maps out the lake bed, depth and features all in one go.  There is no need to keep putting it out and disturbing the fish around a feature you’ve seen.  You don’t need to drag it through your swim and past feeding fish as it floats on the surface.  Once it’s recorded the information, you can play it back as many times as you like without the need to cast out again, therefore, creating less disturbance, which a plus in my book.  The lake book feature is perfect for mapping the whole lake and has the ability to measure the distance out to each feature.  It’s on Google maps so you can see the features and the horizon marker when you switch to satellite mode.

View of the swim on the lakebook

View of the swim on the lakebook

By mapping the lake with the Deeper, you can build up a better understanding of the water you fish.  You see the bigger picture a lot better than with a hand-drawn map.  I have not mentioned the fish icon feature yet, which can be turned on and off.  This also appears to be also a problem with some people.  It’s just an icon for a fish to help you distinguish what the sonar is picking up.  It only lets you know where the fish are.  It doesn’t show why there are there or what they are up to.  This is still down to you to work out, not much difference at all.

Now that’s a nice group of Carp

View of my swim live on the Deeper App

The amount of time it can save you is such a great help.  We are always rushing around everywhere these days and with the fast pace of life, it can only be a bonus and a brilliant time saver.  The most amazing thing I have discovered is that the information I thought I knew about the lakes I fish (and I even have an old hand-drawn map of the lake), is very wrong.  The most surprising one was the gravel bars are not bars, they are just cleaned areas of the lake bed at the same depth as the rest of the area.  There are a few humps which are indentations and some areas that we thought where up and down all over, are just flat.

One of my most memorable session and without the information that the deeper provided and I am sure that my results would not have been as good was back in February this year.

This felt like the perfect spot

This felt like the perfect spot

I was looking for a feature which was prominent around the deep water.  The light orange (on the image) is 11ft 4, then up to 10ft and on the little point up to 9ft 5.  This was the feature I wanted.  I baited the area with a mixture of crushed hemp and chopped boilies the carp should move in over the next 24 hours.  I know they were out there – I just need them to hold up on this spot and then feed regularly here.  I was very mindful not to overdo it, I managed to achieve the perfect balance.  This paid off over the next 3 nights with 8 fish.  For the middle of February, I was very happy with my results.

A couple of nice twenty+ CommonsA couple of nice twenty + Commons

A couple of nice twenty+  Commons

I doubt this would have been possible without the aid of the Deeper.  The disturbance of a lead/marker float for long periods of time (to understand the feature that I had found), would have surely pushed the carp away from the area and into another swim.

On another occasion,  when I was mapping a few spots for the coming season I found a group of carp in a swim.  After I had finished my mapping, I returned to check if they were still about and sure enough they were.  As luck would have it, I also brought my tackle down the lake (for this very reason!).

Now that’s a nice group of Carp

Now that’s a nice group of Carp

I got the rods all set up and flicked the Deeper out.  I located the spot and flicked a 1.5oz lead out and clipped up.  I baited up the rod with a pop-up and did the same with the other rod but put a Wafter on this one.  I used small bags on each rod, which were sprayed with Catalyst booster spray.

All set for some action

All set for some action

Within an hour I had my first take and before I even sorted this fish out, the other rod was off!  I had one fish in the retaining sling and one in the net!

Nice scaley Twenty

Nice scaley Twenty

Happy with this nice 30+ Common

Happy with this nice 30+ Common

In regards to the cheating, I am not sure where you can draw the line.

This can only be classed as a technological advance in fishing, in the same way as we have moved onto carbon rods.  The money spent on development has helped in the advance of these, far beyond the original cane rods.  And with the introduction of buzzers and remote systems, would all this not be classed as cheating?

In my opinion, any tool which is going to help the modern carp angler catch a fish in this day and age, who clearly has a lot less time to fish these days, has to help – don’t you think?. I believe a lot of the negativity is born by the lack of understanding of the product.  If some time was taken to read and watch a few blogs/vlogs people may realize the Deeper is a great bit of kit.  For the money, it’s an amazing bit of kit, it will help you bank a lot more fish, it’s time-saving and will give you a greater understanding of the water you are fishing.  It’s so much more than a fish finder or feature locator.

You can combine all your recordings on the Lakebook online page, you can review the whole lake and get a greater understanding of your quarry.  With the Lakebook online feature, you get to understand the topography of the lake, the hiding spots, interception routes, and the underwater highways, at a quick glare.

The Deeper pro+ is sure to catch you more carp and save you an awful lot of time.

until next time

Glugged Hookbaits

Do people still glug their hook baits or is this a thing of the past?  Personally,  I have been glugging my hook baits for so long I can’t remember when I started.

The principal is that you glug your hook baits to stand out from the rest of your freebies in your baited area or when you’re using single hook baits.  It boosts the attraction of your bait within the area you are fishing.

I tend to do them in 1-kilo bags.

You can glug your baits with a flavour of your hook bait or add oils.  Over the years, a couple of my favourites have been;

Oyster sauce

Toasted sesame seed oil

You need to test a sample batch to check that the boilie absorbs your chosen glug.

Over the past few years bait companies have introduced some great booster sprays.  This is to give your bait an instant boost or you’re can leave them for days, weeks, months or even years.

I tend to boost the ready-made version of my bait and then store in the fridge (that’s my fridge and not the family one).

There are also available food dips designed for this purpose in mind.

There are also some great liquids which you can boost your hook baits, two of my personal favourites are;

and you can mix them together.

These particle hook baits are a mix of pop-ups, wafers and bottom baits all done in one tub, if you don’t fancy doing them in kilo bags.

These are a few old baits I still have around in my fridge, not 100% sure which baits there are, probably liver & squid.

Hope This Helps

Richard

New Releases

The latest and freshest releases from across the platform
When settlers first arrived at Lake Ontario, they found Atlantic Salmon there in quite prodigious numbers. However by the 1890’s with gross overfishing and the industrialisation of the landscape man had completely wiped them out. This film charts a modern day conservation program that is trying to re-introduce a genetically related version of the species back into the lake and its river system. It is beautifully shot and combines historical archive with testimony from scientists, conservationists and anglers, all trying to re-establish The Forgotten Salmon. To watch this video now, just login or register
A slight change of format for this episode as Jamie Hughes and Andy May discuss the the decisions and tactics that they would apply to a specific venue, in this case Weston Pools. And rather than them both fishing different pegs, here Andy spends the session sitting behind Jamie asking him all the questions that you would like to ask a 3 times Fish O Mania champion. Fishing the Weirpool, a lake he knows very well, Jamie decides the best tactic to maximise his weight is to target Carp & F1s. So he’s using pellet, 4mm & 6mm to be precise, but he plays a waiting game feeding very little at first. As the fish to warm up his options increase. To watch this video now, just login or register
Day One Outdoors Season 3 brings you another selection of excellent all round fishing action from Oregon based host, Cody Herman. This series includes a trip to Chile in search of Chinook Salmon imported from the Columbia river, as well as a winter visit to Clearwater Lake, Idaho. Whatever he tackles, Cody explains his tactics and makes his fishing very understandable and enjoyable. Register or Login now to watch this series
Charlie Moore “The Mad Fisherman” is back with another series of his hit show, No Offence.  He’s criss-crossing the States meeting up with a few of his sporting heroes for a spot of fishing, something good to eat and a glass or 2 of decent red wine. Not necessarily in that order.
“Vikings” superstar Jasper Pääkkönen joins the Arctic Waters team for a trip to Patagonia, Argentina. They’re guests at Los Buitreras lodge on the Rio Gallegos, run by Swedish fly fishing fanatic Rikki Sjöberg. And they’re in for a treat, as this remote location offers fly fishing for trophy Sea Trout to over 10kg in some stunning scenery. Part 1 of 2
The Arctic Waters team head off on another epic adventure, this time to the Kharlovka River on the Kola Peninsular in Russia. They are staying in the Atlantic Salmon Reserve camp in isolated splendour. They are the first guests of the year and are royally looked after, not only by the camp’s chef and his team but also by the fishing guides, whose expert knowledge and experience of the area means that they are into the returning salmon in no time at all. Part 1 of 2
Between them, Andy May and Jamie Hughes have won 4 out of the last 6 ‘Fish O Manias’ and are regarded as two of the very best match anglers in the country. They’ve got together to produce a series of instructional videos that deal with all aspects of successful match fishing – preparation, bait and tackle selection, which tactics to use and when to change them – enabling you to share some of their secrets and improve your own match fishing skills.
Over the past decade, Confluence Films have become one of the most highly regarded producers of fly fishing movies worldwide. This series is their complete collection. Each film features stunning cinematography and brings us some fantastic freshwater and saltwater fly fishing footage from all corners of the globe. The films also tell us some interesting stories and remind us all what a fantastic sport, fly fishing truly is.
The 5th film in Confluence Film’s incredible collection is Providence, a saltwater fly fishing adventure to the famed Providence Atoll, in the Seychelles. These waters were closed for several years due to the threat of Somalian pirates so when the team arrived in October 2015, they were basically fishing virgin flats. Not surprisingly, they encountered a myriad of hard fighting flats species such as Giant Trevally, Bluefin Trevally, Bonefish, Trigger Fish, Milkfish, Bumphead Parrotfish and plenty more. This is a fantastic film and story filmed at one of the best destinations you could find…. not to be missed by anyone interested in saltwater fly fishing.
Arctic Waters is a fantastic new series from fishing crazed country, Finland where over half of the population actually go fishing!  The team which includes Juhani Henriksson and Hollywood actor, Jasper Paakonnen visit various locations in Finland, Sweden, Russia and beyond. The show not only showcases some fantastic destinations and demonstrates successful fishing techniques but also highlights environmental issues in these areas and shows the local culture and the experience you can expect visiting there.  Arctic Waters is a mixture of fly fishing and lure angling in rivers, lakes and the saltwater. The series is presented in Finnish with English subtitles and some English speakers appearing.
Following DRIFT, RISE and CONNECT comes WAYPOINTS, another must watch epic fly fishing adventure. Journey around the world through both fresh and saltwater to some amazing locations including St. Brandon’s Atoll in the Indian Ocean for Giant Trevally and Bonesfish, trout fishing in the wilds of Patagonian Chile, coastal Southeast Alaska for Steelhead, the Himalayan rivers of India for Golden Mahseer, and the jungles of Venezuela for saber-toothed payara. With stunning cinematography, this film showcases some truly special fly fishing destinations whilst sharing some interesting stories through the eyes of fly anglers Oliver White, Jeff Currier, Greg Bricker, Gerhard Laubscher and Rooster Leavens.
Rise, the follow up to Drift takes us to 6 stunning new fly fishing locations in search of fly fishing nirvana. Kicking things off in Florida, with some spectacular tarpon action, the story then takes us to a fantastic lodge in Patagonia for some of the world’s best rainbow and brown trout fishing. Back in the USA, we’re in Louisiana in the wake of hurricane Katrina to see how the redfish fishery was affected post Katrina. Boasting a huge estuarine system, there are more redfish here per acre than anywhere and less fishing pressure. Henry’s Fork on the Snake river is next and can probably claim to offer the best dry fly fishing in the USA. With an incrediby diverse array of water, and beautiful scenery, this is a stunning place to fly fish. In Venezuela, we’re in Los Roques which as most people would is one of the best bonefish flats fisheries in the world. Finally, we’re in Alaska, possibly the most iconic sport fishery in the world where Ray Peterson set up the first fly in lodge operation, setting the standard for the many lodges that followed.
Confluence Films broke the mould for fly fishing films when they created “Drift”. Beautifully shot on 16mm & 35mm film, it sketches the passion of a selection of dedicated anglers, devoted to their sport. John and Amy Hazel speycast for Steelhead on the Deschutes River, Oregon. Brian O’Keefe is on the saltwater flats of Belize casting at the Permit tailing in front of him. The reservoir tail waters of America’s Mid West provide blue riband Trout rivers, even in mid winter. The Andros Isles are home to one of the most famous Bonefishing guides, Charlie Smith. And finally John Steihl and Travis Smith put themselves in the hands of local guides on the trip of a lifetime to Kashmir, India. Drift magnificently conveys how fly fishing can be so addictive and provide such thrilling entertainment.
Another visual masterpiece from Confluence Films, ‘Connect’ explores the connections between the angler and his natural surroundings…  his fellow anglers…  and ultimately the fish on the end of his line. In six very different locations around the world a selection of top anglers take you through the journey of their attempt to catch a trophy fish in a variety of specimens. Cherry Salmon in Japan, the Tarpon, Bonefish, Permit grand slam in the flats of Cuba, wild Trout from the rivers of the Yellowstone Park, giant Pike from remotest Alaska, Striped Bass with unorthodox tactics in Maine and beautifully ugly giant Tigerfish in Tanzania, all have their own story and all provide excellent fly fishing action.
As Iceland’s fly fishing guides don’t get to fish much themselves during the summer season, some of them make use of the very first days of the season. But only the toughest dare to fish opening day in Iceland; a big mistake, according to Iceland fishing guide Matti Hakonarson. In “Frozen Guides” we join him and a client as they fish the first week of April for hungry trout and char.

Captured

Ashley Rae loves to fish and she’s been doing it most of her life. But it’s only recently that she’s discovered the thrill of sitting for hours on a frozen sheet of ice in the middle of winter. In this beautifully shot record of one season’s campaign, across the Land O’ Lakes in Ontario, Canada she teams up with a number of local experts to demonstrate the range of methods that can be used. From dropping on to a small lake by helicopter for some lightweight jigging for Brook Trout, to employing all the modern technology in an attempt to catch a trophy Walleye.
Seasoned fly fishing guide, Josh Nugent and worldwide fly fisherman Richard French head from Calgary, Canada to the Spanish Pyrennees to follow in the footsteps of Ernest Hemmingway. They have been set a number of challenges that they need to fulfil and in attempting to do so, encounter unforgettable adventures, breathtaking scenery and some incredible fly fishing!
From reknowned fly fishing filmmakers, Brothers on the Fly, comes another fly fishing masterpiece shown at the Rise Fly Fishing Festival Tour. This short 15 min film follows a group of fly anglers exploring the crystal clear rivers of Slovenia in search of marble trout. Part satire, the film asks if we’re all taking fly fishing a bit too seriously as one man pushes his mental boundaries looking for his first elusive marble trout. You can also see Una The One, C&R Crime and Reality,  and Welcome to Iceland right here on Fishing TV
The Fly Nation team are a collection of young anglers based in Canada who travel to some of the most exciting and rewarding fly fishing destinations around the world. Starring April Vokey, each episode is a video diary of their exploits and they share their skills, methods and sense of fun. Whether casting for Tarpon off the coast of Florida or catching Atlantic Salmon in the rivers of Iceland their energy is entertaining and infectious.
April Vokey and brothers Naoto & Yoshi Aoki are on the Midfjardara River in Iceland. It is one of the world’s top destinations if you want to catch Atlantic Salmon. It’s also stunningly picturesque. They are not disappointed as local guide Rabbi Alfredsson knows where to find the fish and how to have a bit of fun.
In the first of a new 2 part film, Italian film maker and keen carp angler Alessandro Baccoli takes a trip to Cavagnac Lake in the South of France. The fishery’s manager Arnaud Frenchou introduces us to the lake and explains the tactics and rigs you’ll need for success in this stunning location.
