What’s bathymetry?

Bathymetry is the water depth measurement in lakes, seas, or oceans. Such maps are made with echosounders (sonars) which send beams of sound and show real-time data on depth, bottom contour and structure, vegetation and aquatic life on a screen.

Depth maps are great for fishing because they help find the best locations to fish and target particular species based on depth and terrain. It’s a must-have tool for any modern angler.

Colours indicate depth – from light blue (shallow) to dark blue (deep).

Contours with bigger spaces in between show a more gradual slope.

Contours that are closer to each other indicate steep slope of the terrain.

How to identify fishing spots?

Depending on the season and fish type, you can have a pretty good idea where to catch fish on a particular lake.

Hidden islands

Also known as underwater islands or sections of a lake bottom that rise gradually. These bottom structures tend to have certain types of fish all year long. Ideal for feeder anglers looking for “tables” to feed the fish properly.

Drop-offs

Rapid declines in depth. Steep drop offs, especially with some wrinkles, twists and curves are where fish tend to travel between deep and shallow waters. Drop-offs are also the main thing to look for when fishing for carp – as it’s where carp can move up and down in the water.

Shoals

Slowly declining lake areas, which then drop off into the depths. In larger lakes, they may seem like a bump in the bottom. Some lakes only have one or two shoal sites. Shoals tend to have thicker vegetation where insects and baitfish live, which larger fish feed on. “Pits” at the bottom (like tables but going down, not up) are a good place for bream/some whitefish

Trip 11 Carp Fishing – 2022

With another opportunity to get out on the School Lake, I was soon set up in the same swim as before. It just made sense to do this. I have the ability to put all three rods on spots where I would originally need to move to a couple of different swims. This was clearly the way forward – now the trees have gone.

The Swim

There was only one other person fishing and he was in his normal peg – 10 (as they do). This certainly does produce carp, but not the regular big older carp, the nice dark ones that I love. I had baited up as before and was planning on sitting and waiting unless something brings me to move on.

Just after eleven fifteen, the right rod was away and I must have been too slow as it found a snag. That island must be littered with tackle. I’ve now moved back to the end of the island in the hopes of avoiding that happening yet again. At least I’m getting my tackle back, but for the inexperienced people, it must be very frustrating, When I fished here some twenty years ago, there was never this issue.

Robin

At twelve-thirty, the middle rod was finally away, and this felt like a nice carp. Halfway across the lake, it rolled, it was a very light-colored mirror, which I haven’t had before. This made the fight a lot more interesting, especially in the margins as by now I’d seen the fish a few times and I definitely hadn’t caught it before.

The other side

I was very happy with that fish, and there may be other ones I’ve not caught, but regardless of that, it’s a lovely place to fish for a few hours over the winter months each year. With the rod back out on the spot and an hour and a half to go, there is definitely a possibility of another carp.

I had a mega drop back on the left rod, had to strike, but there was nothing on the end. I flicked it back out, but I’ve only thirty minutes to pack up time.

Unfortunately, that was it for me and I headed home. We shall see when I get out for my next trip, as I really don’t fancy being out on 70+ mph winds, it’s better to be safe than sorry and I do get out a lot, it’s just not worth the risk.

Until next time

Richard

Using a smaller hookbait ?

Using a smaller hookbait can pay dividends when most lakes see the constant flow of Ronnie rigs with large popups attached. We do a whole range of 8mm and 10mm Dumbbell wafters that are as at home on a Slip D or German Rig as they are on a wide gape in a PVA Bag. This Classic Corn version being a big seller for those that know 🧐😜
