The carp have been spawning over the Bank Holiday weekend, which could explain my blank last Friday night. I have kept away from the lake, as it’s my belief that they should be left allow to do their stuff and then given a few days rest afterward. A few days not fishing never hurt anyone.
When I came in the gate tonight, I headed right as this would be the bank where the lovely S/W wind would be pushing onto. I just felt that somewhere along here is where they would be. The first few swims had been taken (which was to be expected) and I just carried on round to a part of the lake where I had not fished for over 2 years. This may surprise you but there are oh so many options on this water. The area had grown in popularity once but it seems to have lost its appeal over the last year. I have been waiting for this to happen, its a lovely part of the lake and the carp also love it down here.
I can stay all day on Sunday, it just has to be the perfect area for the weekend.
I have also switched back to the Catalyst for this weekend, after finding 10 kilos under a bag of Smokey Jack in the chest freezer this week (Brucey bonus).
For the first night and day, both rods were fished in the margins, I had found a couple of perfect spots with the Deeper.
This swim has a nice mixture of depths, I feel this is my best option. I catapulted out a good kilo of catalyst over each area where I will stick my baits on for the next 24hrs. Both rods are on Ronnie Rig with 15mm catalyst Wafters.
At about 0130 the right-hand rod was away and attached to a very unhappy wildish common airfield lake carp.
It was certainly an improvement on the size of the carp I have been catching.
The day passed with no fish activity for me which was a real surprise – until the estate manager popped by and had a long chat. It was clear that the fishing was still hard going and he was sure that once the temperature had risen again they would spawn again. There were no real signs around the lake of this but they had not gone their heads down after a feed yet. We shall see what this evening and tonight brings.
It had been a very misty start to the day, with light winds and plenty of cloud cover. It was nice to be back on the bank again and looking forward to another night out on the lake.
With no signs of carp and no indication, I was shocked when the right-hand rod ripped off again, with a little common that was full of life.
These fish just don’t give up the fight very easily. I recast the rod and lay back on the bedchair to watch the evening draw to a close.
Well, the night passed with not a bleep and the morning sunshine was about early.
And with that, I have it until just after noon time. I then headed around the lake with the Deeper for the next few hour’s mapping out a few areas I fancied.
And I found a few interesting areas for future reference.
Until next time
Richard
