Trip 47 Carp Fishing – 2018

After a fantastic weekend away with the kids in Wales.

I am back down the lake after the carp and I have moved back on to the Airfield lake.  Time is sort of running out, we only have until the end of September and August just around the corner.  School holidays are starting in a couple of days.  I will have limited time, so I need to make the most of it.  As I had not seen the lake for about a mouth, it was time for a good walk around.  After an hour, I settled on a swim which was situated on an island.

However, I was going to need the Deeper to locate the 4ft gully which I was looking for.  There are plenty of 2 ft areas but I didn’t fancy fishing with the wildlife on here.

With a couple of perfect spots found, I spomb out what was left of my particle boilies mix from the Meadow lake.  I baited my Ronnie Rigs with a 15mm Catalyst wafter and a 12mm Catalyst wafter.  I flicked them onto the spots, no bags this time, I needed to be very accurate with my casting.

The sunset was looking pretty good tonight as I finally fished setting up.

Overnight, I had plenty of lines and there was the odd fish crashing about, mostly to my left.  I was confident that at some point a take would come my way, unfortunately, that was not the case tonight.

Until next time

Richard

One Of Those Nights

This was one of those nights you will never forget and you pray for. We all head out fishing hunting down that trip of a lifetime.

Well, it happened again.  Boy oh boy, this was a good one, there’s no better feeling then beating you last PB fish, even if it’s the only fish of that trip.

In the space of 12hrs, I managed to bank my first UK forty, a new PB mirror and then carried on to catch another 6 x 20.  This was also one more then my previous best of 5 and after a long spell of blanking and losing fish, I can’t believe it.  It will probably take a few days to sink in.

40.01

You just never know when it will happen again – tomorrow, in a year or two but this is what motivates us all to go fishing.

Until next time

Winter Preparation

Any carp angler that is wishing to have a successful Winter campaign, will need to have done a lot of preparation and thought into where, when and how you will be fishing.  I know it’s only July, however, you need to start planning now.

1- Venue

Pick a venue that you are happy with and do your homework before the Winter sets in.  You can’t just turn up in November, with no idea of the features the fish love, where they are and their patrol routes.
The way I do this is to pick 4 swims depending on the size of the venue (more if larger). They need to give you access to view and observe the lake when you are there.  Always listen out for topping fish, on quiet cold Winter nights, you may just hear a fish in your area or another close by and be on them the next time.

2- Swim Choice

Know your swims before Winter arrives.  Take note of horizon markers as Autumn arrives and clip up and count the number of turns around two poles.  Now if you really want to confuse other anglers, instead of using 12 ft why not use 9 or 10?  It does not matter as long as you use a length of cord with a loop in each end, why does it need to be 12 ft, it will keep the other anglers of your spots.

This year I will be arriving for all my Winter trips in the dark, so, I will need to be fully aware of all the spots I am fishing, well before Winter.  This is OK if you only fish one water.  However, if you are planning a campaign on a new venue, you should be on there already learning.  I have done very well in the past when I was fishing a lake on the Norfolk/Suffolk boarder, I would arrive after dark, I knew 3 swims very well and was just casting into the V shadow that a tree made and baiting up the same way.

3 – Be happy and Confident with what you are doing

If you are none of these you will struggle on those cold Winter nights.  The last lake I did the Winter on, had a track which was about a quarter of a mile long.  Which was OK, until it rained most of that Winter and by the end of January, I had truly had had enough of the slog up and down that track in the dark.  This drain the enthusiasm from you.  My golden rule to myself is, I must be comfortable these days, as I have passed the 50 marker.  It is a wee bit harder in the Winter, than when I was 16.

4 – Bait

Again, be confident in your bait.  You can’t change halfway through the Winter you need to keep your chosen bait going in regularly. this will give me a huge edge over other angler’s

5 – Equipment

You need a good bivvy, sleeping bag, a stove (with plenty of gas), water (for Winter night brew ups) as I said before you must be comfortable.  This, in turn, will keep you happy and bring your confidence level up, which equals fish on the bank.

To nick a saying from my friend Mr Rob Nunn ‘effort equals reward’.

I hope this has helped and you get plenty of fish over the winter.

Trip 46 Carp Fishing- 2018

I am out again for another quick overnighter.  I was really not sure where to go after the other night.  The weed was pretty bad in the swim I had been in.  However, I had seen fish in the swim I was fishing last week but was it to soon to go back there.  As far as I was aware, there had been no one in the swim for nearly a week (no-one fished at the weekend or Monday night).  Today is Wednesday and I had seen fish there in the morning when I packed up, I just had to have a look.  The wind was pushing down the lake towards that swim, think I have no option but to give it a go.

Sitting comfortably and enjoying the view another night under the stars is on its way.

Bait wise, I was still sticking with the 15mm Catalyst wafters over a bed of hemp and tigers.  A few Catalyst Boilies and pellet to boost the spots and we shall see in the morning if I was right or wrong, either way, it’s nice to be out.  Even if I get a good night sleep, it will be a bonus at the moment it’s still pretty hot.

I do feel it’s time to get back on the Airfield lake but with the school holidays under a week away, I will have limited time to fish then.  I may just leave it until the last month and hit it hard.  I will be able to give it my full attention a few nights a week, unlike over the holidays when it may be as few as 2 nights every two weeks.  Well, I will see how it pans out.

My first take happened just after 2230 with another 19. 6 common.

20180711_224519

Which was a nice start, as I wasn’t 100% sure about the swim and I had not blanked.  This gave me confidence early on in the night, we shall see.

The next take around about 2315 and this time it was a nice 20lb mirror bang on 20lb.  I checked twice as I like to be as accurate as possible.

20180712_055808

With the rod out on the spot again – this was the second fish to my left-hand rod.

It was just before midnight, when the left-hand rod blasted into action and after a close call with the overhanging tree to my right (I did get hooked up on for a little bit over a twig), which I’m sure didn’t help when the carp managed to get hooked up around my captive back lead.  I found out when I had got the fish in the net.  The alarm had sounded a couple of time but I thought I had got away with it.  I flicked my head torch on to see what had to happened and a common of about 18ish slipped the hook and rolled out the net in slow motion.  If I had slacked the other line off, which unbeknown to me at the time was hooked up on the fish, it would have sunk down into the net nicely.  Unfortunately, as the pressure was on the hook from the other rod it rolled out, oh boy, time to redo both rods and get my head down again.

After about 10 minutes, the left had rod pull tight and held there, I quickly pulled into the rod and found thin air, oh well.

That was another good night out on the lake with a couple of nice fish.

Until next time

Richard
