Trip 53 Carp Fishing – 2018

I had the opportunity to do two nights this weekend and with a change in the weather. It was perfect timing, a drop in temperature and a good bit of wind a rain pushing through over the next few days.  The pressure is still up but I feel the wind and rain will get them feeding again.

After a lot of humming and haring over the past few days (based on the information I had gathered on my last trip), as I spent a good two hours looking about and flicking the Deeper out.  I had also Spombed some bait over a wide area in the hope of getting them on the bait and in the mood to feed.  I am positive they where just not on anglers bait.

I had ground up a few kilos of the Catalyst, mixed up with the Food Dip and left to soak for a few days.  I then mixed with SF hemp and tiger when spombing out and I will be altering the hook baits until I find a combination which picks me up a carp or two.

After a good look around the area where I felt the fish were in – I was proved correct and soon decided on my best option for the next 48hrs.

Now the hard choice of which spots to fish.  As I had arrived just after noon time, I just put a couple of Pva Bags out, filled with a mix of SF Pellets which I soaked in Minamino and Betafin liquids.

I had attached an Evo maggot Clusters for a bit of add attraction and feel for the carp. Remembering that carp feel their food items and as they feel very natural, I am hoping to trick them into picking up my bait.

My plan was to set up camp first, the kids were here for a few hours until the wife collects them on her way to her mum’s.

They were very happy tucked up in the bag together, with the rain pouring down all afternoon.

My first take happened just after 5pm and was on the rod down the right-hand margins.  I had put this out on my arrival, as I was not planning on baiting up until later on in the evening.  I was very happy to see that it was a mirror when it first rolled on the surface.  This is rare on here and I was wondering if it was the one I had before. But I don’t think it is.

I was very happy with that and it just pushing the scales over 20lber I was very pleased, as my average weight on here is rubbish this year.

After watching the carp topping today and on my last trip, I flicked the Deeper around and was surprised how shallow the water was.  I carried on looking for a deeper spot and I finally discided on a couple of spots for the night and would put a bait back up the margins in the daytime – I felt it would be too risky in the night time.

I Spombed out about 5 loads (over each area) of a mixture of Particle, chopped boilies, and pellets, all small food item’s.  I fished a 15mm Catalyst Wafters on one rod and an Evo maggot Clusters on the other rod.  Amazingly, the night passed with no action and I moved the right-hand rod to the margin spot.  After spotting a nice carp of the island, I decided that it would be a good option for a few hours today.  I could spend some time observing the carp, it’s a hard nut to crack this one and is why I keep coming back despite the hard times.

The second night passed with the same massive amount of action as the first, until 0550 when the left-hand rod pulled away slowly and kited off to the right.  After a very quick fight, one of my favorite 8lbers was in the net again, which was a bit of a pain due to the heavy rain at the time.

With the rod back out, it was time for a brew and check the weather.  I have a feeling it’s going to be a wet pack up today, this does certainly make a change from the baking heat over the last few months.

I started to pack up around noon time and managed a duck and a nice kingfisher photo.

Trip 52 Carp Fishing – 2018

I have managed to get out for another midweek overnights, this time there is no rush back, as the wife has kindly offered to take the kids to their holiday club.  I have no work on, as the sun/heat has cut down on my gardening work.  I can’t complain, as it’s way too hot to be outside all day, not good for me.

I headed down the Airfield lake, doing my best not to turn into the Meadow lake car park.  It’s fishing quite well at the moment but as you know, I do love this lake and searching for its unknown inhabitants.  But no these silly 10lber’s which are getting to me a bit.

The swim choice was quite hard but in the end, I headed for an area where I had spotted a few fish on my last trip.  The hard part is getting the fish to move away from their sanctuary.  There are about 100 yards of a tree-lined bank with a few bays hidden.  If you cast too far down, the inevitable happens and they find a nice sunken branch to dump your hook in.

Finding fish in this lake is very easy, getting them to pick up a hook bait is much harder and then you need to get them into your net!  Not a simple task but a part of the fun on the lake.

With two spots picked out, I Spombed out a mixture of Spotted Fin Tiger nuts and Hemp with crushed catalyst boilies, a mix of catalyst pellets, Betafin Smokey Jack pellets soaked in Betafin liquids and mimamonos for added attraction.  In there was also a fake tiger nut, cut from an Evolution Cube.

This had been soaked in catalyst booster spray and smelt pukka, the other rod was a maggot cluster Ronnie Rig set up.

As I was trying a more natural approach to my hook bait, the lake is closed for 6 months of the year, so their staple diet is natural food items.

We shall have to see how I get on over the coming months, as you can’t base your findings on just a few trips out on the bank.

I had a fair few liners through the night, my first take came out 0530.  With a bump and a knock as the fish kited around a boulder, it was no sooner on and off.  This was a shame, but I knew I was in the right spot.

I did, however, move into a different area.  This was after seeing a few fish showing themselves, but time got the better of me and it was time to head home.

Until next time

Trip 51 Carp Fishing – 2018

With the school holidays in full swing, I was very lucky to be able to fit another night in this week.  This is all down to my dad coming down for a week to look after the kids when I was out gardening.  The weather was so hot, he stayed for another week!

The big carp hunting is proving very hard on the airfield lake this year (as you may have noticed) but I just have to keep on going.  I will never catch them sitting at home or on another lake. They’re certainly here, I just need to find them – this is proving hard.  It’s not helped by the whole of the west bank is out of bounds and a fair few other areas.  That said, this is why I love the place, wild, open and peaceful, as a fair few syndicate members can’t get on with the place.

With the wind still nicely pushing from the south, I headed off to the daisy field swim.  I soon spotted a few nice fish showing.  Now to get the baits out without disturbing them –  not a simple task on here and only time will tell.  With only 4 spombs of SF hemp, tiger and a small bag with a 15mm Catalyst wafter with an Evo maggot cluster.

20180801_191120

I was all set with the Nsr 50 in the water, unhooking mat and water all laid out ready.  It was time for some tea.

20180801_191402

At around midnight, the left-hand rod belted off and I was attached to a 10lber, it was an ok start but turned out to be my only fish of the night.

Until next time
