This trip was going to be a social at the airfield lake with Rob. However, after getting a message on Wednesday from another syndicate member, saying the fish are spawning and neither myself or Rob wanted to fish for spawning Carp (this isn’t very good the fish’s welfare). So plan B was put in place and I find myself fishing the idyllic Holbrook Millpond again – this is never a bad thing.
As I arrived at dusk, after a merry trip round the M25, by the time my kit was sorted out, it was pitch black. Rob offered to put my baits out with the boat, this made sense, as you really need to be fishing as close as possible to the far bank. There was no way I could do that in the dark. All rod’s were fished with nature pop ups, a load of chopped boilies and pellets over the top.
Night 1
Sometime around 04.30, the right hand rod was off and not very long after that, my first mill pond fish was out, not the biggest but a start. That rod was put out again and Rob came down the bank and to ask if I could take a photo for him of a 20+ Common, with this done, we had a brew, a quick chat and we were back off to our swims.
Around noon, we both reeled in, had a good look round the lake and had a brew in the club house. I decided on the positions of my rod’s for the coming two night’s.
I would be fishing a small set of pads, the far margins and a set to the right of me. These areas where baited with a mix of chopped & whole boilies, catalyst & Betafin Pellet soaked in minaminos / Betafin.
The weather had warmed up a bit but there was plenty of cloud about, we were very confident.
As the second day came to a close, it was looking like the fish had changed their feeding pattern to the nights. We had not had a touch between us all day until at 22.30 and Rob banked the resident grass carp.
The night passed with both of us loosing fish and much more favourable weather conditions for a fish in the daylight hours.
Unfortunately and for no reason, that we can come up with, both myself and Rob where unable to bag any more fish, they just switched off .
Until next time
Richard
