UK Carp & Coarse Fishing

I’m out on the club lake again this week, the weather has been playing havoc with my gardening work, but we do need this rain. A few days’ break from it at the right time would certainly help!

Not wishing to waste another day at home, like yesterday, I organized my day kit again and headed to the School Lake. This time, hoping for a change in fortune from my last trip here, the conditions are so much better and this gives me great confidence today. 

I pitched up near where I was on my last trip, there are only two other cars in the car park. One is the same guy from the other day, he is still on here and I’m not sure where the other guy has pitched.

I’ve been mindful of the fact that other anglers are likely to turn up later, as the rain is forecast to stop. I’ve picked a swim opposite a break in the pads on the far bank, which I have Caterpulted a few 20mm Classic Corn Boilies. I’m fishing a 12mm PPS pop up on one rod, with a 15mm Masala dumbbell wafter on the other. I’m trying to mix things up on here, in an attempt to bag the bigger carp and the last of the big fish I’m after, as I’ve had a few repeat captures now.

My first take was at 10 am to the left-hand rod which had on the big masala wafter. It ploughed through the end of the pads I was near, I held the pressure on and gently walked back towards the fence. The carp was instantly out of them and off to my left after a small set of pads down the lake which were a couple of swims down. I held my ground and the carp turned, after that it was a simple case of playing the fish out under the rod tip.

I didn’t weigh the fish, I estimated it at between 12 and 13 lbs, I was happy with that and soon had the bait on the spot again.

Can’t believe the robins are this friendly so early on in the year, things must be hard for them.

About 12.30 the right-hand rod was away, I was into a very angry smaller common this time, which oddly was more problematic than the last one!

The rain had gone and the sun was out and wow you could feel the difference. I even decided to keep the brolly up for the last hour and a bit. A couple of other anglers were walking around, trying to choose a swim, I think I will hang it out in this spot.

I had a massive drop back on the right rod again, just after 1pm, I finally tightened up to the fish, but it managed to bump the hook out – probably due to the 2oz lead I had no option of using, as I hadn’t got enough with me. I’ve found recently, that the lighter the lead, the greater the chance of them getting the hook out.

With my only 2oz lead in the box, there wasn’t much choice, other than giving it another go, fingers crossed.

With pack-up fast approaching, it’s looking like 3 takes for me today, and I’m very happy that I will be back again at some point over the Autumn months. I’m not exactly sure when, as I have a few things on at the moment and a bit of gardening to catch up on.

With a few hours spare after gardening today, it had been some time since I thought I would take a drive and look at the School Lake. It’s Monday and generally, the lake is empty, so I put the gear on the car. When I arrived to my surprise, there were 4 cars in the car park, I decided to take a lap of the lake. The day was heating up and the carp were on the top in various areas. I still had yet to sort my floater kit out, which is a bit bad considering the summer we have had.

Here will do to start with. There were two-night anglers up by the island and two-day anglers near the car park. This gave me the middle part of the lake, which is an area I quite like and it was a good place to start. It was 12 o’clock by the time the rods were all set up, I’m not sure if I will sit it out here or move along, if someone else heads home.

It’s going to be a hot one, so I’ve pitched up where there is a bit of shade, we will just have to see how it goes. To be honest, it’s not going to be an easy one, I have to be home just after 3pm which doesn’t give me a great deal of time to play with.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be today, but it was nice to see the lake again

After a fellow syndicate member mentioned he had one of these, I took a look and was straight on eBay to order one for myself.  I’ve been using it now for the past 5 months, and I’ve found it to be an absolute pukka bit of kit.

My main reason is where I fish it’s very dark, I’ve found that I’m also a bit slower and unstable on my feet, the older I get and this helps me see my rod.  I also can swivel it around so I’m able to see the path down to the water.  I also sleep with a small head torch around my neck to help as well.
