Trip No 42 Carp Fishing (2014)

It’s been over 8 months since I have fished this lake.  This is due to most of my time being spent on the new water.  Which is now closed for the winter.

My friend suggested doing a socal night as we have not fished for a long time together as well.  We had heard this lake was very quiet at the moment, it may be worth a go.

I arrived around 3pm to find the lake completely empty,  so I parked the barrow in a swim I like the look of and had a slow walk round.  I was just going back through the first gate when I spotted my mate coming up the track.  After a quick chat and I told him that it looked pretty dead,  apart from when I was on the far bank I had seen a few fish in the middle of the lake, bubbling up.  We both walked round slowly and he also agreed that was the best looking area.

I settled for the double swim and he was down a couple more from me.
I placed my first rod by some lily pads at the bottom of the margin shelf, where I had seen some fizzing earlier on my walk round and put a good helping of boilies over the top for good measure.

The other rod was cast just off the edge of the pads, towards the middle of the lake, where the fish had clearly been moving up and down.

The weather had broken and the sky had cleared, so the temperature was going to drop and as the sun started to go down there where a few fish showing in this area.

We were feeling confident that we had picked the right area.
Unfortunately for me, I lost a small fish around midnight when the hook pulled at the net.  Joy.  I check and the hook was still super sharp as I always sharpen them straight out of the packet.
At around 4am, my mate popped his head around the brolly and asked if I would take a photo of a nice long common (23-12).

Can’t wait for the fish to put on more weight,  it will be Stunning.
I awoken to a very misty morning and still with no carp to my name.

However, I did have a few hour’s before I needed to be home.
At around 10am, my right hand rod bust in to life and I was attached to a small common of around the 14lb mark.  This fish slipped into the net and I was releaved after the lost one in the night.

I recast and got the kettle on and sat and watched the wildlife,  there was a pair of sparrow hawk’s hunting around the trees on the far bank,  which was great to watch.  I had a kingfisher on my rod’s earlier, I will manage to get a photo one day I hope.  There are a pair of green woodpecker’s knocking around on the trees,  this place is quite amazing to sit and watch the world go by, who needs Wi-Fi and TV?

Till next time

About richardhandel

I would like to give a brief snap shot of my life and introduce myself; My name is Richard Handel and was born in 1965 in Suffolk. I have worked as a UK Operation & Intermodule Manager for a shipping company. I live in Hampshire now and am married with 2 young children, both girls so I am a bit outnumbered even the cat is a girl! I have been fishing since I was about 7 years old. I started on small local rivers in Suffolk, then moved onto gravel pits and then carp fishing. My personal best is a 39.08 mirror, over recent years I have started river fishing again, on the Hampshire Avon, this is a nice break from the carp lakes. My life has turned a big corner this year, the company I was working for relocated their Operation centre to Estonia. I was offered a job at the head office in London. This would have meant a 5 day commute and working in Stratford. As a family, we did not fancy this, as I would hardly spend any time with the children (and the Mrs). So after 22.5 years, I was given a nice redundancy package and with my wife is working full time. I became the house husband. This has meant a complete turn around in my fishing, as I can pick and choose when I go. I have found a splendid new syndicate to fish this year, which includes 5 lakes and some 8 miles of river with only 150 members. It's an amazing change to the way I am able to fish. I am now trying to start my own tackle business and make a bit of a name for myself in the world of fishing, as I have retired from real work. Richard
