Trip No11 Carp Fishing (2014)

The wife and kid’s have kindly let me go fishing for 2 nights in the half term week, as work has been a bit hard going over the past weeks. (I may need to bring back some presents soon, as they have been so kind.)

On my last trip I had seen fish and had a drop back in the night.  I was feeling confident with my swim choice last time and the wind is still pushing the same way.  The sun was shining and the weather forecast was good.  I opted for the same swim again.  I had not been planning to do this, as I was hoping to move around each time I fished to get a feel for the lake, however, this swim was still looking good for some fish.

Rod-1 was put back in the same area as the the last trip, with another good helping of sweetcorn,  tuna ground bait pellet mix and some 8mm boilies.  There was also a few boilies ‘sticked’ out for good measure.

Rod-2 this time was going to-be a roving rod, depending on the weather and if I spotted any fish.  I was also going to play around with different types of hook baits, e.g pop ups or bottom baits, so I could see what generates a take.

Night -1

This was all I got, a roach.  Not bad for a carp session. Dispite seeing plenty of fish topping at first light and into the morning.  I have changed over rigs on the roving rod and repostioned, we will see what the day brings.

I was expecting cloudy with a nice breeze from the west.  I have got flat calm water and bright sunshine.  If this continues all day, I may have to do a rethink.  At the moment, the fish are still here, but off the island and out of my casting range until I get some practice in.

The conditions have finally done what the weather man said.  After watching the fish this morning, I have stuck the marker rod out as far as I can get it and have found that the fish were feeding in a nice silty area a lot bigger than I have found before.  I have moved rod 1 onto this area with more of the same mix in the spod.

The Great Spomb, fantastic bit of kit.

I am going to give the roving rod a bit more time,  before I choose were to cast tonight.  If I have no real options, I may put it out just off the baited area, which sometimes produces fish, I have been told.

With the wind now pushing nicely in my face, I am hopeful that this should push the fish away from the island and towards my baited area.  I have changed Rod 2 to a 6bait min pop up sweetcorn rig.  These fish may be on more natural foods.  I have blasted this bait out, past the baited areas, a bit closer to the island.  In reality still a long way off, if the fish are still showing at this range, I may have to change over from fluorocarbon to wiplash braid.

Night is closing in and it time to get my head down.
Night -2

With only having three beeps in the night, I am now sitting having a brew as the sun is coming up.  I am wondering what was not right and what to do in the last few hour’s to save a blank.

After seeing a fish top to the right, I swapped my rod’s over and reeled in Rod 2.  I changed over to a lighter lead with a small bag on and flicked it out,  it was now 0830, and I needed to be off by 1000.

No joy again, had a lovely relaxing time on the lake after a few hard days in the office.  The rest of the week I am either in the office or out with the family, which will be great fun as the weather is look good for some time.  (I wonder if I will get another night pass before the end of half term?!)

Till next time

About richardhandel

I would like to give a brief snap shot of my life and introduce myself; My name is Richard Handel and was born in 1965 in Suffolk. I have worked as a UK Operation & Intermodule Manager for a shipping company. I live in Hampshire now and am married with 2 young children, both girls so I am a bit outnumbered even the cat is a girl! I have been fishing since I was about 7 years old. I started on small local rivers in Suffolk, then moved onto gravel pits and then carp fishing. My personal best is a 39.08 mirror, over recent years I have started river fishing again, on the Hampshire Avon, this is a nice break from the carp lakes. My life has turned a big corner this year, the company I was working for relocated their Operation centre to Estonia. I was offered a job at the head office in London. This would have meant a 5 day commute and working in Stratford. As a family, we did not fancy this, as I would hardly spend any time with the children (and the Mrs). So after 22.5 years, I was given a nice redundancy package and with my wife is working full time. I became the house husband. This has meant a complete turn around in my fishing, as I can pick and choose when I go. I have found a splendid new syndicate to fish this year, which includes 5 lakes and some 8 miles of river with only 150 members. It's an amazing change to the way I am able to fish. I am now trying to start my own tackle business and make a bit of a name for myself in the world of fishing, as I have retired from real work. Richard
