Trip 2 (2014) Carp Fishing

As I was unable to get out in all that good stormy weather over Christmas & New Years.  I was very pleased that I was be able to get out and fish in another good storm. I find it great fun battling the elements, I am sure is one reason we all love to get out there!  And when there’s a good storm coming, the fish love it as well.

After a good look around, I realised I was the only mad person fishing (lucky me).  I picked a swim across from a bed of norflok reeds it had a nice drop off down to 6ft and to my left there was a nice overhanging tree with a patch of gravel.

With both rod’s done, it was time to set up camp.  I was using my pioneer bivvy this time out, as I was not brave enough to use my brolly.

After that it was time to get the kettle on and have a bite to eat.

After about an hour the wind started to pick up and then along came the rain.

After 2 and a bit hours, it started to calm down abit and by 8pm the rain had gone and the stars were out.  The wind was still doing it’s best and I was glad I picked this swim as it gave me a bit of shelter.  The wind chill was bad.  I had looked at a swim by some reeds in the shallows.  Now that would have been a bad choice, with this cold wind.

This is what it was like before the storm got me, a nice warm sunny day.

Two minutes later,

Every Carp angler has one, a nice friendly Robin!

As I settled down for a long night in the dark, I was feeling very confident, I had checked the water and ground temperature.

Water – 8
Ground – 9
Air – 10

I knew it would drop in the night, as the stars started to arrive, but it wasn’t going to make much difference.

The wind and rain moved in by 9am and with still no sign of any carp.  I was hoping that the day would bring on a bite or two (if I am lucky).  One other angler turned up for a day session.

Well most of the bad weather had past by 2pm.  It was now time to start thinking of packing up and heading home after a very rough night with no real sign of any carp.  I did have one crash out in front of me at around 4 am, which gave me some confidence that I was in the right area.

All set for the walk up the muddy track.

Oh well second blank of the year,  still only January mind. Feels like March with this weather.

About richardhandel

I would like to give a brief snap shot of my life and introduce myself; My name is Richard Handel and was born in 1965 in Suffolk. I have worked as a UK Operation & Intermodule Manager for a shipping company. I live in Hampshire now and am married with 2 young children, both girls so I am a bit outnumbered even the cat is a girl! I have been fishing since I was about 7 years old. I started on small local rivers in Suffolk, then moved onto gravel pits and then carp fishing. My personal best is a 39.08 mirror, over recent years I have started river fishing again, on the Hampshire Avon, this is a nice break from the carp lakes. My life has turned a big corner this year, the company I was working for relocated their Operation centre to Estonia. I was offered a job at the head office in London. This would have meant a 5 day commute and working in Stratford. As a family, we did not fancy this, as I would hardly spend any time with the children (and the Mrs). So after 22.5 years, I was given a nice redundancy package and with my wife is working full time. I became the house husband. This has meant a complete turn around in my fishing, as I can pick and choose when I go. I have found a splendid new syndicate to fish this year, which includes 5 lakes and some 8 miles of river with only 150 members. It's an amazing change to the way I am able to fish. I am now trying to start my own tackle business and make a bit of a name for myself in the world of fishing, as I have retired from real work. Richard
