When you start down the road of R&D, there are many things you need to consider.

One is not just making sure the prototype bait is working on known hotspots, but also seeing if the test bait draws fish away from baited hotspots to feed.
This is simply done by placing your hookbait where you haven’t before and are trying a new spot. This 46lb UK Common being such a magnificent example of this tactic working so well.

Placed away from known pick up spots, when this fella came calling, I nearly dropped the rod with excitement. Not just excitement in catching a stunner but additionally exciting to catch it during test conditions and time.

I think overall in a season laden with big carp , this one stands out as it really cemented in my brain the importance of using a food source bait every time over attractor style baits.

With the show season finishing later in the year at the new Doncaster show in April, it was the end of April before I managed to get the rods out.
First fish of the year which is always big plus and on the soon to be released test bait too and from a water that wasn’t producing many bites at the time makes this capture stand out for me.

After a sluggish start to the year on the infamous Snaggy pit resulting in one bite to which I lost ( my fault too! ) it was time for a change of scenery and a more civilised style of fishing on a venue with fish that I knew loved a boilie or two .
A steady application of Trigga Ice in various sizes along with the new boilie bites in and amongst the dense weedbeds would hopefully see a few bites come my way .
That it did and on only my second session I was five fish in with the best going 51.14 and a new lake record, not too shabby for a northern gravel pit…
