My 2015 Review

What a year this has been.  When I wrote my last year’s review (again over the Christmas period), it was sitting in front of an open fire, in Ireland with the family and I had a glass of wine next to me.  Little did I know that by the end of January, (after work my way up from being a 16 year old dock runner to becoming the UK & Ireland Operations Manager for a shipping company) my company would decide to relocate to Estonia.  My job would be based in Stratford (London), with no real recompense and it still being a 60 hour week.  Having two young children, it was time to take the money and run.  I am building a small on-line tackle outlet call Carp Tackle Supplies.  This is still very much in it early stages.  I and helped the company retrain staff until the end of May and also helped office close down.  I then spent the summer holidays with the family, which was a  fantastic time.  I then started to go fishing a lot more and tried to become part of the fishing world.  This has been hard work but successful, I am now supported by Bait-tech, Godman Angling, ASSO Fishing Line, Tf Gear and more to come.  Which I feel is pretty amazing.  To be completely honest, I only really started fishing properly in the Autumn, as my head was still in the clouds and I was trying to get over what had happened.  It was a bit of a shock, as I had dedicated 23 year’s of very hard work to this company and it was no more.  I understand why they did this and we did try and work things out – there are no hard feelings between us.  It was mostly the stress levels reducing and opening up my mind again as I had been focused in that direction for all these years.

So, the fishing improved and what a last half of the year I have had!

There was a new lake to get my head round and a new section of the river, which is about 6 miles long.  In hindsight, I should of planned it better and divided my time up.  I was trying to be on the lakes and rivers.  I did try for the Barbel.  But also kept thinking I must understand the lake before Winter, so, as well as the Barbel, I was looking for nice Winter Pike swims.

In the end, I moved off the river and on to the lakes and ended up with 5 thirty’s and a fair few twenty’s.  This was amazing and I have learnt a lot about that lake, which I am very happy about.  With the lesson’s learnt, I will wait until next year and dedicate June, July and August to the river solidly.  The beginning and latter part of the year will be the lakes again.  January and February will be Pike fishing time, with the odd session on the lake, when the weather is looking great.

So, at the moment I am a full time house husband and fisherman.  I need to dedicate a bit of time to the tackle shop side of things and build a better website.  I probably not sell on eBay so much and see how things pan out over the next year.  I believe that a lot more time is needed to get things up and running better.  I am loving the fishing more and more as the stress of work did effect that side of things more.  Also the house husband side of the equation is also fantastic, I had missed so much of the children growing up, it’s been great getting some of that back before they get too old.  They are growing up very fast.

That was a year in the life of me, a quick snap shot and next year will bring more changes.  However, I will be in control of these more.

Have a great 2016

Until next time

About richardhandel

I would like to give a brief snap shot of my life and introduce myself; My name is Richard Handel and was born in 1965 in Suffolk. I have worked as a UK Operation & Intermodule Manager for a shipping company. I live in Hampshire now and am married with 2 young children, both girls so I am a bit outnumbered even the cat is a girl! I have been fishing since I was about 7 years old. I started on small local rivers in Suffolk, then moved onto gravel pits and then carp fishing. My personal best is a 39.08 mirror, over recent years I have started river fishing again, on the Hampshire Avon, this is a nice break from the carp lakes. My life has turned a big corner this year, the company I was working for relocated their Operation centre to Estonia. I was offered a job at the head office in London. This would have meant a 5 day commute and working in Stratford. As a family, we did not fancy this, as I would hardly spend any time with the children (and the Mrs). So after 22.5 years, I was given a nice redundancy package and with my wife is working full time. I became the house husband. This has meant a complete turn around in my fishing, as I can pick and choose when I go. I have found a splendid new syndicate to fish this year, which includes 5 lakes and some 8 miles of river with only 150 members. It's an amazing change to the way I am able to fish. I am now trying to start my own tackle business and make a bit of a name for myself in the world of fishing, as I have retired from real work. Richard
